Oleksandra Betliy: What the Failure to Pass Two Key Bills Means for Ukraine
Ukraine risks losing part of its international financing due to delays in meeting its commitments to international partners. On September 1, the Verkhovna Rada failed to pass two bills important for meeting the requirements of the IMF and EU programmes concerning the taxation of international parcels.
Ukraine already has a significant backlog of unfulfilled commitments, and further delays could directly affect state budget revenues. At the same time, international partners have so far shown flexibility and a willingness to extend deadlines, but that flexibility is not unlimited.
Could there come a point when the IMF and EU suspend funding? Who is responsible for delays in implementing reforms, and how critical are parliament’s latest decisions? Oleksandra Betliy, a leading expert at the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting, discusses these issues. Watch the video for more.
