U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)

Until 2025, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was the primary U.S. government agency responsible for delivering international assistance. Established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, the agency coordinated international development and humanitarian assistance programs. USAID’s work covered a wide range of areas, including economic development, healthcare, emergency response, and support for democratic governance and stability in more than 100 countries worldwide.
