Integrated design of energy system components (iDesignRES)

The project aims to accelerate the development of energy system modelling and optimisation tools by creating advanced open-source solutions for integrated modelling. It covers long-term energy system planning, short-term operational modelling, and the development of dynamic multi-physics models. In addition, the project will deliver state-of-the-art visualisation tools for the long-term planning of multi-carrier energy networks, designed to support network operators and public authorities.

iDesignRES is one of the European Union’s largest projects in the field of energy system modelling and optimisation. It seeks to improve the openness, transparency, and accessibility of energy modelling tools, thereby supporting the transition to a more sustainable and efficient energy system.

Products:

  • Multi-physics models of energy system components;
  • A system modelling tool for long-term energy system planning;
  • An open database and cloud-based platform (Cloud Hub) for running models online;
  • Open-access visualisation tools accompanied by training materials.

All models and tools are validated through a series of European demonstration cases developed in collaboration with local industrial partners.

IER is a member of the project consortium, which brings together 21 organisations. The project is coordinated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Key partners include the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), SINTEF – the Foundation for Industrial and Technical Research (Norway), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Électricité de France (EDF), the University of Deusto (Bilbao, Spain), Tecnalia Research & Innovation (Spain), Aalborg University (Denmark), the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), TU Wien (Austria), the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE (Germany), the Ukrainian think tank DiXi Group, and other organisations.

As part of the project, IER contributes to the development of the operational modelling tool, assesses the needs of Ukrainian stakeholders, and leads communication, dissemination, and outreach activities to maximise the project’s impact.
